Garner-Webb defeats VMI 47-41 in 2OT

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Lucas Beatty threw five touchdown passes, including the game-winner, to lead Gardner-Webb to a 47-41 win over Virginia Military Institute in double-overtime Saturday.

Kenny Cook caught a 25-yard touchdown reception from Beatty in the second overtime, one play after Dillon Christopher missed a 36-yard field goal for VMI. Paul Schumacher forced overtime with a 43-yard field goal for Gardner-Webb with 4 seconds left.

Gardner -Webb was up 31-13 in the third quarter. Then Al Cobb mounted a comeback, throwing three unanswered touchdown passes for VMI, highlighted by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Deon Watts and the ensuing two point conversion put VMI up three with 4:03 remaining in regulation.

Beatty passed for 430 yards for Gardner-Webb (4-3, 1-3 Big South), finding Kenny Cook 12 times for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

Cobb threw for 351 yards and six touchdowns for VMI (1-7, 1-2 Southern). Doug Burton caught six balls for 85 yards and a score.
