Alcorn State rolls past Texas Southern 40-25

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) — John Gibbs Jr. threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another and Alcorn State coasted to a 40-25 win over Texas Southern on Saturday.

With Gibbs running the offense to perfection, the Braves (6-2, 4-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) opened a 40-7 lead on the Tigers (5-2, 3-2) when Arron Baker scored on a 21-yard run 5:33 before halftime.

Anthony Williams III opened the scoring with a 2-yard run on Alcorn State’s first possession before Gibbs took over. He connected with Jordan Payne for a 19-yard TD in the first quarter then opened the second with a 2-yard run.

After the Tigers got on the board with a 12-yard pass from Jamal Small, Gibbs answered quickly by connecting with Charles Hughes for a 63-yard scoring play and followed that up with a 14-yard pass to LaDarrien Davis.

Small also scored on a 7-yard run with 30 seconds left.
