86-year-old woman struck, killed in Maryland

SEVERNA PARK, Md. (AP) — Anne Arundel County Police say an 86-year-old woman was struck and killed while walking on Ritchie Highway in the dark.

It happened about 5 a.m. Thursday at Cypress Cove Road. Police say Catherine Kearney of Severna Park left her home, walked onto the road and was struck by a vehicle traveling north.

Police say Kearney was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say there are no pedestrian control devices or street lights where she was hit.

The driver of the car, 29-year-old Stephen Alt of Denton, was not hurt.

Police say pedestrian error appears to be the cause of the accident.
