Teen brand sells just one tiny size, some outraged

WASHINGTON — Don’t bother clicking around the Brandy Melville website, looking to find your size of dress, top, or bottom — if you’re not a “Small,” you’re out of luck.

The Brandy Melville line is gaining popularity with teenage girls, according to data published in Huffington Post, although critics are concerned the company’s “one size fits most” policy sends an unhealthy message to impressionable young girls.

Some of the items for sale online and in Brandy Melville stores (the closest to D.C. are in New York city) list the size as Small/Medium.

To be able to fit into Brandy Melville’s only size of skinny jeans, she would need to have a 25-inch waist — generally a size 0 or 2.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the average 16- year-old girl weighs about 138 pounds and has approximately a 31-inch waist.

Even Abercrombie & Fitch, which in the past has been criticized for ignoring overweight children sells clothes with extra-large on the label, up to size 14.

Brandy Melville did not respond to requests from Huffington Post, but in an earlier interview in USA Today an executive said “We can satisfy almost everybody, but not everybody.”

The company’s Instagram account features images of young, fashionable, small-boned teens.
