Graphic abortion protest set near Liberty Bell

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An anti-abortion group has received a permit to project images of bloody, aborted fetuses on a 10- by 12-foot screen as part of a demonstration scheduled for Friday next to the Liberty Bell on Philadelphia’s historic Independence Mall.

A public affairs officer for the Independence National Historical Park said the agency does not consider content when it permits assemblies or activities.

Columbus, Ohio-based Created Equal, which has an all-day permit, said it will show the images on a continuous loop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the heart of the city’s tourist section.

“This, unfortunately, is what happens when a nation kills its children,” Created Equal’s national director Mark Harrington told The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/ZqVrSW). “We believe those victims need to be shown publicly. I’m happy to stop doing this when the killing stops.”

Harrington told the newspaper that he is aware that Independence Mall, the site of the Liberty Bell, is a big draw for families with children. The group is not intentionally trying to expose children to the images, he said.

The display will be surrounded with warning signs so parents can take another route or otherwise try to ensure their children do not see it, he said.

“We are trying to give parents discretion, but we realize some children will see these images,” Harrington told the Inquirer.

The group has shown the images on a big screen at public demonstrations in San Francisco and Washington, he said.
