The Citadel defeats Charlotte 63-56, 2OT

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Aaron Miller threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 197 and another score to lead The Citadel to a 63-56 double overtime win over Charlotte on Saturday.

The Citadel (2-4, 1-1 Southern) took a 49-42 lead with 2:15 remaining but Charlotte quarterback Matt Johnson connected with Austin Duke for a 71-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with 1:49 left.

Charlotte’s Maetron Thomas scored on a 25-yard run on the first play of overtime. The Citadel’s Tyler Renew answered with a 3-yard score. In the second overtime, Miller connected with Brandon Eakins for a 17-yard strike. Charlotte had a 1st-and-goal on the 3, but the 49ers had a rush for a loss and three consecutive incompletions.

Duke led Charlotte (3-4, 2-1) with four touchdowns, three receiving, and 284 total yards, 254 on 12 catches. Johnson threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns.

The Citadel had 689 yards of total offense, the most in school history. Charlotte had 679 yards.
