Knicks beat Celtics for 1st preseason win

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Carmelo Anthony scored 16 points and the New York Knicks earned their first victory of the preseason Saturday with a 96-80 win over the Boston Celtics.

J.R. Smith added 14 for New York (1-1), while Tim Hardaway Jr. and Cleanthony Early had 11 apiece off the bench. The Knicks lost to the Celtics in nearby Hartford on Wednesday.

Smith hit consecutive 3-point field goals late in the third period, helping the Knicks increase the lead to 78-64 heading to the fourth. Boston got no closer than four in the final period.

Jared Sullinger and Marcus Thornton scored 15 points apiece for Boston (2-2), which lost for the second time in two nights.

Brandon Bass scored 12 points for the Celtics and Evan Turner added 11.

The Knicks shot 54 percent in the first half and led 53-47 at halftime.
