Hodges carries San Diego past Stetson 31-23

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jonah Hodges rushed for a school-record 273 yards and two touchdowns, Trey Wheeler passed for two scores and San Diego rallied to defeat Stetson 31-23 on Saturday.

After the Hatters (2-4, 0-2 Pioneer League) took a 23-17 lead in the fourth quarter the Toreros (4-1, 2-1) rallied. Wheeler capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive with a 6-yard strike to Reggie Bell to take a 24-23 lead and, two plays after forcing a Stetson punt, Hodges broke off a 56-yard run for the final score.

Then San Diego’s defense took over.

Joe LaBarbera recovered a fumble on the Torero 12 and Toney Sawyer intercepted Ryan Tentler’s pass in the end zone on Stetson’s last two possessions.

After Hodge opened the scoring less than 2 minutes in with a 53-yard run, Stetson scored the next 16 points. Tentler started it with a 31-yard pass to Kegan Moore.

Tentler’s second touchdown pass put the Hatters up in the fourth quarter.
