Florida A&M beats Savannah State 24-14

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Damien Fleming accounted for three touchdowns, Chase Varnadore kicked late a field goal and Florida A&M beat Savannah State 24-14 for its first win of the season on Saturday night.

Varnadore’s 40-yarder capped a nine-play, 53-yard drive to give Florida A&M (1-5, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a two-score cushion with 1:16 left.

Fleming finished 14 of 27 for 268 yards with three interceptions and ran 13 times for 48 yards. He powered the Rattlers to a 21-7 halftime lead with a 30-yard touchdown catch on a pass from Curtric Evans midway through the second quarter and touchdown passes to Casey Glines and Zachary Webster in the final 3 minutes.

Savannah State (0-6, 0-3) closed within 21-14 on Tino Smith’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Derek Kirkland with 7:58 left in the game. Smith was 27 for 44 for 290 yards for one touchdown and one interception.
