Red Wings send Porter to AHL

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have assigned center Kevin Porter to Grand Rapids of the AHL.

The 28-year-old Porter — a Detroit native — has 29 goals and 26 assists in 206 NHL games with Phoenix, Columbus and Buffalo. He was one of nine players cut by the Red Wings on Monday. Forwards Mitch Callahan, Landon Ferraro, Tomas Nosek and Teemu Pulkkinen and defensemen Nick Jensen and Alexey Marchenko were assigned to Grand Rapids. The team also released forward Jeff Hoggan and defenseman Aaron Rome from their tryouts.

Detroit opens the season Thursday night against the Boston Bruins.
