Exxon Mobil in talks to sell Merrifield campus to Inova Health System

Ever since Exxon Mobil made known its intention to sell its 117-acre Merrifield campus, the property has found its way into every big land use search. It’s been mentioned as a possible site for a new FBI headquarters, an expansion site for the World Bank, even a potential new headquarters for Maryland spice giant McCormick & Co. Now it appears a potential buyer is much closer to home, that is, across the street.

Exxon Mobil is engaged in discussions about a sale of the campus to Inova Health System, The Washington Post reports. And while a deal is far from done, Inova is the only suitor still at the table for the property.

Inova is in the midst of a multiyear growth plan, and the Exxon Mobil campus would make a logical home for its flourishing and high-profile Translational Medicine Institute. The large property might also serve as home to Inova’s cancer center, according to The Post.
