WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department is taking action against individuals and networks linked to two terrorist groups based in Pakistan.

Treasury’s action on Tuesday targets the leader of Harakat-ul-Mujahedeen (HAR-ah-kat uhl-MOO-hah-deen), which operates throughout India, Pakistan and Afghanistan and maintains terrorist training camps in eastern Afghanistan.

Treasury also slapped terrorist designations on two people and their networks for allegedly working to provide financial support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (lash-kahr ee TIE-bah), a well-organized group based in Pakistan’s Punjab province that is suspected of having historical ties to Pakistani intelligence.

The action freezes any assets they might have in any U.S. jurisdiction and bans U.S. citizens from doing business with them.

David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, says both groups are violent terrorist organizations that train militants and support extremist groups, including al-Qaida.
