Virginia lawmaker touring district by canoe

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Sen. Tom Garrett says he’s driven every possible route through his district.

But he’s never floated through the 22nd District — until now.

On Tuesday, Garrett launched a three-day canoe trip through the district in Lynchburg. He plans to travel about 50 miles on the James River and arrive at his family property in Buckingham County on Thursday. He will camp on public islands along the way.

The Republican lawmaker tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1r8WUtp ) that he envisions the trip as drawing attention to the district’s natural resources and to the river.
