ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler says his office will review allegations that Facebook and OKCupid broke a state law by manipulating customer data as part of company research.

Gansler said Wednesday his office wants to meet with company representatives to determine whether or not the research was conducted appropriately and whether or not the companies intend to continue such research.

OKCupid this summer admitted that it manipulated data to see how users of its dating service would react to one another. Facebook let researchers change news feeds to see how it would affect users’ moods.

Facebook spokesman Israel Hernandez says the company is examining its internal processes and doesn’t believe the law applies to the research conducted under these circumstances. OKCupid did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.
