Md. defense contractor’s owners charged

BALTIMORE (AP) — The operators of western Maryland defense contractor Quantell Inc. face federal charges they embezzled about $285,000 from employee benefit plans at Quantell and a second firm they controlled.

Shaun and Joanne Tucker couldn’t be reached for comment on the charges announced Wednesday. They have no home telephone listing, and a call to Quantell in Grantsville wasn’t immediately returned.

The married couple allegedly used employee benefit funds from Quantell and Middletown-based Intaset Technologies Corp. to build a home near Deep Creek Lake.

Quantell has fewer than 100 employees, according to a 2013 report from the state labor department.

The company’s website says it is owned by a disabled military veteran. It won a contract in 2011 to support the Naval Surface Warfare Center, according to the website.
