DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) — One of the nation’s earliest military heroes is being honored in Virginia’s Dinwiddie County.

A state historical marker is set to be dedicated Wednesday in memory of native son Winfield Scott. He was twice wounded and promoted to brigadier general during the War of 1812. Scott also fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

Scott attended the College of William and Mary. He died in 1866.

Besides Scott, the historical marker will also recognize the War of 1812. An estimated 70,000 Virginians served in the battle against Great Britain.

The state historical marker was issued by the Virginia Department of Historical Resources.
