Woman breaks window, rescues baby in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A woman who noticed a baby in a hot car in a parking lot in San Antonio used a tire iron to smash the windshield and rescue the child.

Angela Radtke (RAD’-kee) said Monday that she knew she had to get the baby out of the locked car in a grocery store parking lot. Police say surveillance video shows the baby was in the car nearly 40 minutes. Radtke said the boy looked red and sweaty.

The 9-month-old was treated for dehydration.

Police arrested the father on a child endangerment charge when he emerged from the market. Child Protective Services is investigating.

Radtke says that as a retired Army captain, she’s been trained to assess a situation and act. She also has three children of her own.
