Transfer Mitchell cleared to play for Ga Tech

ATLANTA (AP) — Former Maryland forward Charles Mitchell will be able to play for Georgia Tech this season.

The Yellow Jackets said Tuesday the NCAA granted Mitchell’s waiver to transfer without sitting out a season. He wanted to be closer to his family in the Atlanta area, especially his ailing grandmother.

The 6-foot-8 Mitchell has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He averaged 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds over two seasons with the Terrapins, making 17 starts.

Mitchell is one of four transfers who will play for Georgia Tech this season, joining senior forward Demarco Cox from Mississippi, sophomore guard Josh Heath from South Florida and senior forward Robert Sampson from East Carolina, the son of Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson. Another transfer, senior forward Nick Jacobs from Alabama, won’t be eligible until 2015-16.
