DC restaurant owner, son get 2 years of probation

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Washington restaurant owner and his son have been sentenced to two years of probation for making illegal payments to the city’s taxicab commission head.

Anthony Cheng Sr. and Anthony Cheng Jr. were sentenced Monday. The younger Cheng had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of paying a gratuity to a public official. The elder Cheng pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of offering an unauthorized compensation.

Federal prosecutors say the Chengs gave $1,500 to the chairman of the taxicab commission for help starting a taxi business that never opened. The chairman was working as an FBI informant.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1rthLqv ) reports both men apologized in court. Their attorneys said the men look forward to putting the case behind them.
