DC Council set to vote on concealed handguns

WASHINGTON (AP) — The D.C. Council is expected to decide Tuesday whether to allow residents to carry concealed handguns in the district, with some restrictions.

The vote comes two months after a federal judge struck down the District’s ban on carrying handguns outside the home. The judge put his ruling on hold to give the city time to rewrite its gun laws.

The concealed carry restrictions the council is set to vote on require residents who want concealed-carry licenses to provide a specific reason for needing one. They’d have to complete an extensive safety course.

Open carrying of firearms would remain illegal.

Should the council pass the bill, it would be in effect for 90 days and would buy time for the council to draft more permanent legislation.
