Church volunteer charged with sending sexually explicit messages

WASHINGTON — A North Carolina man volunteering as a youth pastor at a Haymarket, Virginia, church faces charges of sending sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl.

Prince William County police say Vincent Bowes, 22, sent the messages in August using the smartphone messenger Kik.

Police charged Bowes, a college student who served as a Park Valley Church volunteer, with attempted indecent liberties with a minor and criminal use of a cellphone.

Staff at the church learned about the messages and called police. The teen and Bowes never made contact, police say.

Bowes will be extradited from North Carolina.
