United coach Ben Olsen gets contract extension

WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United have signed coach Ben Olsen to a multiyear contract extension.

United rewarded Olsen with a new deal Monday as the club closes in on one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history.

United won only three games last year. This year they lead the Eastern Conference with a 14-9-6 record with a month to go in the regular season.

Olsen was promoted from assistant coach to head coach near the end of the 2010 season after Curt Onalfo was fired. Olsen’s record is 46-64-33 over parts of five seasons.
