RG3’s ankle not fractured, no surgery needed

WASHINGTON — Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced Monday that quarterback Robert Griffin III did not sustain a fracture in his dislocated left ankle, and will not need surgery.

Griffin’s foot turned awkwardly and he fell to the FedExField turf in the first quarter Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After he was carted off the field he was diagnosed with the dislocation, but the fear was that he may also have fractured it, an injury that would have ended his season.

The timetable for Griffin’s return is uncertain, but he is expected to be able to return at some point this season. According to Gruden, he will be reevaluated in a couple weeks.

Kirk Cousins, who filled in and led Washington to a 41-10 win Sunday, will be the starter in the meantime. Washington’s next game is at Philadelphia this Sunday, September 21.
