Sharla Rae wins Barretts Debutante Stakes

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Sharla Rae won the $93,850 Barretts Debutante Stakes by a neck at Los Alamitos on Saturday.

Ridden by Elvis Trujillo, Sharla Rae ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.32 and paid $12, $3 and $2.40 at 5-1 odds in the field of seven 2-year-old fillies who had been offered at any Barretts sale.

Into Oblivion returned $2.20 and $2.10 as the 3-10 favorite, while Global Hart was another 9 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $4 to show.

Trainer Doug O’Neill credited his barn staff for their suggestion to add blinkers to Sharla Rae to restrict her field of vision.

“They’ve been dying to put blinkers on her,” he said. “I decided to do it after the last race and it paid dividends because she was a lot closer without (Trujillo) having to ask her. It looked like we were going to be running for second, but this filly broke her maiden here and she had been training really well.”

Sharla Rae won her first career race at Los Alamitos on July 13. She has two wins in three starts and career earnings of $89,695.
