Jorge Lorenzo secures pole for San Marino MotoGP

MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy (AP) — Jorge Lorenzo will start the San Marino Grand Prix from pole position as he aims to continue his impressive record at the circuit.

The 27-year-old Spaniard was fastest in qualifying on Saturday, with a time of 1 minute, 33.238 seconds.

Pramac Racing rider Andrea Iannone was second, 0.051 seconds behind Lorenzo, whose Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi was third, 0.064 slower.

It was a first pole of the season for Lorenzo, who has won the past three editions of the San Marino Grand Prix and has never finished off the podium here.

MotoGP world championship leader Marc Marquez failed to secure an 11th pole position of the season. He starts fourth as he bids for a 12th victory in 13 races this season.

Marquez has an 89-point lead over Dani Pedrosa.
