Chardon schools to close Friday because of escape

LIMA, Ohio (AP) — Chardon schools outside of Cleveland will be closed Friday as the community deals with the news that convicted killer T.J. Lane has escaped from prison.

Lane is serving three life sentences in the shooting deaths of three students at Chardon High School in February 2012. He and two other inmates escaped from a prison in western Ohio Thursday evening. One of the inmates has been captured.

Chardon police have been assigned to guard the homes of family members of Lane’s victims.

Law enforcement authorities have been conducting an intensive manhunt in an area around the prison for Lane and a 45-year-old man imprisoned on aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges. A Lima police sergeant says both are considered dangerous but are not believed to be armed. Lima is about 80 miles south of Toledo.
