Richmond-area car shop owner pleads guilty

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The owner of a luxury car repair shop in suburban Richmond has pleaded guilty to failing to send employees’ tax payments to the government.

The office of U.S. Attorney Dana Boente (BEN’-tay) says 58-year-old Richard A. Long of Midlothian entered his plea in federal court Wednesday. He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 7.

According to court papers, Long owned the Mercedes-Volvo Service Center. He was responsible for collecting, accounting for and paying federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes for his employees.

Long admitted that from 2007 through the first quarter of 2013, he kept nearly $329,000 withheld from employees’ paychecks rather than forward the payments to the federal government.
