Loudoun basketball coach sentenced on sex charges

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) — A former youth basketball coach in northern Virginia has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sex crimes involving a 12-year-old player on his team.

Forty-year-old Marlow Afshartous (AFF’-shar-tiss) of Reston pleaded no contest earlier this year to one count of sodomy and one count of object sexual penetration. Afshartous, who also uses the name Marlow Talley, coached youth teams throughout the region and was a reserve player for Virginia Commonwealth University in the mid-1990s.

Loudoun County prosecutors say Afshartous engaged in a sexual relationship with one of his players in 2012 while coaching a Sterling-based team. The girl eventually disclosed the relationship to family members.

At a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Leesburg, the judge also ordered that Afshartous be placed on indefinite supervised probation after serving his time.
