WASHINGTON (AP) — The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History plans to open its first section of newly renovated galleries next year with a focus on innovation and the history of American business.

The museum is in the midst of a five-year overhaul of its west wing exhibition spaces. Museum officials said Wednesday that the first floor will open in July 2015. The second and third floors will open in 2016 and 2017.

In the new innovation hall, the museum will feature inventions and trademarks from history. It will include the workshop of video game pioneer Ralph Baer and the Smithsonian’s first exhibit on business history.

The renovated first floor also will include a new education center, performance stage and plaza.

Ongoing renovations will bring exhibits on democracy, immigration and American culture.
