Apple discontinues iPod Classic

WASHINGTON – The clickable wheel and 160GB of storage are gone. Apple has discontinued the iPod Classic.

The original iPod, which morphed into the Classic, revolutionized music-to-go 13 years ago, when it was introduced.

With Apple’s unveiling of its latest phone and a smartwatch, the MP3 player has died.

The move has been years in the making, but now it appears to be a reality.

The iPod Classic disappeared from the Apple Store Tuesday, CNet and other outlets report.

The original iPod debuted in 2001, and the Classic first came out in 2007. It was Apple’s last music player without a touch screen.

The no-frills music player last cost $249 and offered 160GB of storage, but today’s streaming music services and high-capacity flash drives have transformed how people are listening to music.

The storage capacity may be the one thing music enthusiasts will miss. None of Apple’s other iPod product offers no more than 64GB of storage.
