23 dead, 32 injured in Haiti bus accident

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Authorities in Haiti say 23 people died and 32 were injured in a bus accident west of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

Nadia Lochard with the Civil Protection Agency says the bus went down a ravine after the driver apparently lost control late Tuesday in the coastal town of Petit-Goave.

She said the bus was headed to the western coastal city of Jeremie. The injured were taken to a hospital by ambulance and helicopter.

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Haiti, where vehicles are often grossly overloaded and police rarely enforce traffic laws.
