BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a student pilot and an instructor have been killed after their small plane crashed into a freight train at an Albany-area railroad yard.

Officials in the town of Bethlehem, New York, say the single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk took off from South Albany Airport at 4:50 p.m. Monday and soon afterward crashed into a rail car at the nearby CSX yard just south of Albany.

One person on the plane was pronounced dead at the scene and the other died on the way to an Albany hospital. Their names haven’t been released.

No one on the ground was injured.

The rail car struck by the plane was carrying automobiles. The train wasn’t moving at the time of the crash.

Bethlehem police say the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what caused the crash.
