Platini: Ribery faces ban if doesn’t answer France

BERLIN (AP) — UEFA president Michel Platini has warned Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery that he could be banned for three matches at club level under FIFA rules if he doesn’t answer a call up for France.

Platini tells Bild am Sonntag magazine “Ribery can’t just decide himself whether he plays for France or not. If (France) coach Didier Deschamps calls him up, he has to go to the national team. If he doesn’t he’ll be suspended.”

Ribery, who missed the World Cup through injury, announced his international retirement last month.

However, Deschamps has not ruled out calling up the 31-year-old.

Platini told the magazine that he couldn’t understand his compatriot’s decision, saying “He’s French, the European Championship is in France in 2016, not Poland. He has to want to play.”
