Man charged in 1981 west Baltimore murder

BALTIMORE (AP) — Authorities in Baltimore say a man has been charged with the 1981 rape and murder of a 75-year-old woman and that DNA led to the arrest.

Phillip Lee was indicted Friday on murder and other charges and will have a preliminary hearing Wednesday. He is accused of killing 75-year-old Anna Smith in her west Baltimore home.

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein would not say where the 54-year-old Lee was arrested but said Lee was not incarcerated at the time of his arrest.

Police say in reviewing the cold case in 2005, detectives noted a trace of DNA left on a blanket at the scene.

A preliminary match in the state’s DNA database led detectives to Lee.

An online court record system did not list an attorney for Lee.
