Charleston Southern holds off Newberry 16-10

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Austin Brown threw for two touchdowns, including a 52-yarder to Jared Scotland, to lead Charleston Southern to a 16-10 win over Newberry on Saturday night.

Brown was 10 of 18 for 176 yards and an interception, while Scotland finished with 55 yards on two catches. Kenny Dinkins caught a 20-yard TD pass — his only reception of the game — for the Buccaneers (2-0), and the defense was credited with a safety in the fourth quarter after an intentional grounding call against Newberry.

Both teams struggled on the ground. Charleston Southern had just 85 yards rushing and 261 yards overall, compared to Newberry’s 55 yards rushing and 229 overall.

Jackson Swindler had four catches for 99 yards, including a 62-yard TD grab in the fourth quarter for Newberry, a Division II team. Kyle Clark had a 20-yard field goal.
