U.S. stocks climbed on Monday, pushing the Standard & Poor’s 500 index briefly above 2,000 points for the first time. The index closed with its second record high in a week. Investors were encouraged by the latest round of corporate deal news.
On Monday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75.65 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,076.87.
The S&P 500 added 9.52 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 1,997.92.
The Nasdaq composite gained 18.80 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,557.35.
For the year:
The Dow is up 500.21 points, or 3.0 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 149.56 points, or 8.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 380.76 points, or 9.1 percent.
