A Brazil World Cup bonanza _ for other countries

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s Central Bank says spending by foreign tourists shot up 60 percent during the two months overlapped by its hosting of the World Cup, reaching nearly $1.59 billion.

But the bank’s Friday report says Brazilians themselves spent even more abroad — $4.4 billion during June and July.

The bank says tourists in Brazil spent $797 million in June and $789 million in July. Bank economic department chief Tulio Maciel he expects tourists will spend $100 million in August.

The $2.41 billion that Brazilians spent abroad in July was the highest for any month since 1947, when the bank started compiling such figures.
