South Carolina reserve CB Smith out for season

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina reserve cornerback Jamari Smith is out for the season after breaking his left foot at a scrimmage last weekend.

The school announced the sophomore’s injury on Monday. Smith was in the mix at cornerback, a position where the ninth-ranked Gamecocks enter the season without last year’s starters in Jimmy Legree and Victor Hampton.

Smith enrolled at South Carolina as a running back and gained 103 yards in a backup role in a 70-10 victory against Coastal Carolina last season. He moved back to the secondary after the season and came out of spring practice as a backup.

South Carolina’s cornerback rotation got a boost this summer with three freshmen in Al Harris Jr., Wesley Green and Chris Lammons.
