SALISBURY, Md. (AP) — Newly released figures show the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office accounts for most of the county’s spending on overtime pay.

The Daily Times of Salisbury (http://tinyurl.com/nuekgdm) reports that county employees earned nearly a third of a million dollars in overtime during the last fiscal year. The newspaper found that all but two of the top 20 overtime earners worked for the sheriff’s office.

The Daily Times obtained the figures from the county through a public-information request. Overtime pay totaled $332,000 — just over 1 percent of the county’s $27.4 million payroll.

The top overtime earner was Sgt. Bob Trautman, who made $31,000 in overtime, bringing his earnings to nearly $105,000.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Ed Schreier says deputies often have no choice but to work overtime to keep the community safe.
