Looks like Georgetown may soon be saying goodbye to “the friendliest bar in town.” Mr. Smith’s, the longtime M Street watering hole known for its daily piano sing-alongs, will close at the end of the month, Washington City Paper reports.

The closure is the result of a rent dispute, Mr. Smith’s general manager told WCP. Open since 1965, the bar and restaurant is a Georgetown institution near the corner of M and 31st streets NW.

The restaurant hopes to reopen in an alternative location, preferably in Georgetown, Andino said.

If the restaurant does close for good, it would be just the latest in a string of high-profile D.C. closures during the past few years. Nathan’s traded hands to become Serendipity 3 two years ago — that dessert spot is now closed as well — and The Guards made way for upscale Italian restaurant Rialto last year. Third Edition is now a bustling Mexican restaurant and tequileria from celebrity chef/restaurateur Richard Sandoval.
