CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) — One former Philadelphia Eagle representing New Jersey is leaving Congress. Now another is running against the Democratic establishment to take over an open seat there.
Ex-linebacker Garry Cobb is running against state Sen. Donald Norcross in the state’s 1st Congressional District. The seat opened after Rob Andrews resigned this year amid ethics allegations. The complaint was dismissed in May.
Cobb is a Republican and trails in money and organization. He faces an uphill battle in the Democratic district, which includes the largely poor and minority city of Camden. He says Democrats and President Barack Obama support policies that have hurt minority communities.
Norcross says he wants to expand job opportunities and make sure New Jersey gets its fair share from Washington. He says he was first recruited to run for another seat held by another ex-Eagle, Jon Runyan, a Republican who is quitting Congress.
