Walmart plans store at Virginia Commonwealth

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Walmart plans to open a store on Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus as part of a pilot program.

Walmart and the university announced the project Wednesday in a news release. The 4,100-square-foot store is expected to open in late 2014 or early 2015.

The store will be Walmart’s fifth under a pilot program called Walmart on Campus. The existing stores are located at the University of Arkansas, Arizona State University, Georgia Tech and the University of Missouri.

Walmart has signed a lease for the store with the VCU Real Estate Foundation. The foundation owns a seven-story building under construction that will house the store on the first floor. Classrooms and administrative offices also will be located in the building.
