Tricky Hat wins John’s Call at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Tricky Hat found a narrow opening along the inside and edged Holiday Star by a nose in the $100,000 John’s Call on Wednesday at Saratoga Race Course.

Trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey and ridden by Rosie Napravnik, the 5-year-old gelded son of Hat Trick ran 1 5/8 miles in 2:41.87. He paid $9.10, $4.60 and $3.10 for his first victory in four starts this year.

Holiday Star returned $4.40 and $3.20, and Manchurian High paid $4.80 to show.

Owned by Andrew Rosen, Robert Trussell and Antony Beck’s Gainesway Stable, Tricky Hat is 2 for 2 at Saratoga, having won an allowance races at 1 3/16 miles last August. He has five wins and $253,224 in purse earnings in 15 lifetime starts.
