Israel-Palestinian talks on Gaza underway in Cairo

CAIRO (AP) — Indirect Israel-Palestinian negotiations are underway in Cairo over extending a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and ending a blockade of the territory.

Egyptian mediators have been shuttling between delegations. Egypt’s foreign minister says so far, the two sides “have reviewed what they consider as issues of concern.”

Israel wants Hamas to disarm before considering the militant group’s demand that the territory’s borders be opened. A Palestinian delegate says there can be no deal without an end to the blockade that Israel and Egypt imposed after Hamas took control Gaza in 2007.

The Palestinian delegation is composed of negotiators from all major factions, including Hamas. It’s meeting with Egypt’s intelligence chief for briefings on Israel’s demands.

The talks are taking place on the second day of a cease-fire that ended a month of fighting between Israel and Hamas.
