Jury begins deliberating in agent’s murder retrial

HONOLULU (AP) — Jurors are deliberating in the retrial of a federal agent charged with murder in a Waikiki shooting.

A spokeswoman for the state judiciary says the jury began deliberating Tuesday afternoon.

State Department Special Agent Christopher Deedy is being retried nearly a year after another panel of jurors weren’t able to agree on a verdict. Those jurors weren’t allowed to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter.

The judge presiding over the case ruled last week that the current jury will be able to consider manslaughter.

Deedy testified in both trials that he acted in self-defense and was protecting others when he shot Kollin Elderts in a McDonald’s restaurant in 2011.

The agent from Arlington, Virginia was in Honolulu helping provide security for an international summit. He was off-duty during the shooting.
