Ex-contractor sentenced in bribery scheme

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A former government contractor has been sentenced to three years in prison for conspiracy to bribe public officials at the United States Navy Military Sealift Command.

Michael McPhail was sentenced in federal court in Norfolk on Tuesday. McPhail had previously pleaded guilty to the charge.

Court records show McPhail is a former employee at an unnamed Chesapeake government contractor, which sought business from Military Sealift Command.

At his plea hearing, McPhail admitted he contributed about $45,000 of his salary over nearly two years toward bribes to two public officials at Military Sealift Command.

McPhail acknowledged the bribes were made to help secure work for his company.
