WASHINGTON — TD Bank customers across Canada received a happy surprise last week.

More than 20,000 TD employees distributed envelopes with a $20 bill to every customer in more than 1,100 branches, while those using phone and online banking services received a direct deposit into their account.

But TD Bank took one step further, installing a special “ATM” — Automated Thanking Machine — into select branches.

Local employees designed individualized thank-you experiences and gifts to be given out by the ATM, which talked and thanked the customers.

The gifts ranged from flowers to the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a baseball game. Some of the customers’ reactions were filmed in a video that has since gone viral.
