Olympic high jump champion out of Euros

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s team coach says Olympic high jump champion Anna Chicherova will miss next month’s European championships in Zurich because of an injury.

Chicherova jumped a world-leading 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) to win the Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon in May, but only managed 1.75 (5 feet, 9 inches) in Glasgow earlier this month.

Coach Valentin Maslakov tells the R-Sport agency that Chicherova will miss the August 12-17 European championships because “an injury is not giving her peace” and “she needs to heal.”

Maslakov did not specify the nature of the injury, although Chicherova has previously said it is not a repeat of the right ankle injury that required her to undergo an operation last year.

Chicherova did not compete at last week’s Russian nationals, won by world indoor champion Maria Kuchina with a jump of 1.92 (6 feet, 3 ½ inches).
