Walsh Jennings, Ross win opening matches

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Top-seeded Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross won their opening two matches Wednesday in the World Series of Beach Volleyball to advance to the final round of pool play.

Playing for the U.S. in the international tournament, Walsh Jennings and Ross beat Sweden’s Nina Gravender and Karin Lundqvist 21-11, 21-14 in the morning and topped Italy’s Marta MenegattI and Victoria Orsi Toth 21-17, 21-16 in the afternoon.

“We just stayed steady,” Walsh Jennings said. “After the first game, our coach wanted us to be more aggressive and we attacked more.”

In the lone men’s round of the day, Americans Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser beat Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter 21-17, 17-21 and 15-10.
