Zoo euthanizes Sulawesi macaque named Spock

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Zoo says it has euthanized its Sulawesi macaque, the last of a group donated to the zoo almost two decades ago.

The zoo said it euthanized the 27-year-old male macaque named Spock on Thursday. The zoo says Spock suffered from arthritis in his knees and ankles and had diabetes. The zoo says that in the last few months he was less mobile and his appetite and weight decreased.

Spock was one of a group of macaques donated to the zoo in 1995 by a research center in Oregon that is now known as the Oregon National Primate Research Center. Sulawesi macaques are native to Indonesia and are endangered. The zoo says their median lifespan is about 18 years.
